Chapter 6
Gamma is true to his word and doesn’t try and shaft me, I’ve given him a break and he isn’t about to stuff it up by telling the truth to his superior and look like he isn’t good at police work.
That doesn’t stop me from having another trip down to the precinct and this time my cousin isn’t talking about independence or supporting the memory of her dead aunt. She wants to ring my dad and tell him the whole story, get him to come down and straighten things out. My pleading turns into begging which almost escalates into tears which is all I have left to guilt trip her. This is silly really because we’re a similar age, but I don’t need my dad in on this one.
I’m surprised with the way Gamma goes out of his way to reassure her that I’ll be okay and he’ll send a car round to make sure no one bothers me, cops and family he says. They tell us they know who King really is but aren’t going to tell us, not yet anyway. I’m not convinced, the gunman said he was on a job and stiffed him and the rental car was rented to someone most likely with a credit card. These things are not big secrets unless there are other factors I don’t know about.
I make it back home by one, too tired to eat and fed up of police stations, questions and people getting themselves into trouble with the least amount of effort. My cousin leaves me at Flatbush and I begin the walk to my building when I hear a soft voice that is as quiet as a low wind rustling the discarded wrapper of a Snickers bar.
The voice only says one word, “detective,” but it is enough for me to know who it is. I turn to see her leaning against a white BMW M4 coupe parked in a loading zone.
I walk across the street to her, “are you flipping stupid?”
“Get in,” she says.
She walks around to the driver side and gets in before I can protest so I follow suit and get in too. She starts the car and we zip a couple of blocks away from the likelihood of prying eyes.. At this time of night there are a lot of parked cars huddle together on the street like refuges queuing for food. Still she finds an empty spot between an RV and an old Cadillac. She cuts the engine and leans back in her seat and took a big breath.
She’s gotten changed somewhere and is now wearing a black polo dress and Nike Air Max 90 VT Tweed Sneakers. I like my Air Jordan Futures better, though. Right now I’m not sure what’s sexier, the car or her; her perfume smells better than the smell of the new leather – just.
“I wasn’t very nice earlier on was I?”
“I don’t know, I might have gotten shot.”
“How did things pan out?”
“Called the feds, told them
